We kicked off the 1st Annual ATO Gamma Zeta NCAA March Madness Tournament Pool in 2014 with 32 entries and a winner’s pot of $400. It took the total point tiebreaker to separate Frank Kulze ’75 from Andrew Selby ’10 as the winner. Here were our money winners:
J.D. Sinnock Scholarship Awarded to Jack Vadeboncour ‘13
Jack Vadeboncour ’13 was announced as the winner of the 2013 J.D. Sinnock Scholarship and received a check for $1,000 at Chapter on March 31. Jack has just begun his studies towards a Masters in Accountancy at the University of Illinois this spring. He’s a former treasurer of the Gamma Zeta Chapter and most recently as a senior, lived in the house and drove an important scholarship initiative among the membership that was influential in the chapter jumping 20 spots in the fraternity GPA rankings this past fall. Mike LaVitola ’09 isn’t wasting any time. He’s still a semester away from graduation from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business and he’s already co-founded and assumed the role of CEO of startup, Foxtrot Ventures which “delivers drinks, eats and corner store necessities from your iPhone to your door in minutes”. Chicago 44th Ward Alderman Tom Tunney ’77 joins 65 Gamma Zetas for networking lunch
On February 28, 65 Gamma Zetas got a chance to hear first hand from Tom Tunney ’77 about his time at ATO, his business career as owner of Ann Sather Restaurants and his rise through the Chicago political ranks to Alderman of the prestigious 44th Ward of Chicago which includes Lakeview and Wrigleyville. Phillip Coover ’04 hosted the luncheon at the beautiful University Club in the Chicago loop.

Introducing Gamma Zeta January 2014 New Initiates
On February 10, 2014 Gamma Zeta active members and alumni gathered to initiate our newest class, most who will graduate in 2017. ATO National CIO Wynn Smiley was there to show support along with alumni Jim Dobrovolny ’70, Greg Scott ’76, Jack Klues, Dane Luhrsen, Don Armstrong and Dave Seiler, all 77’s, Dave Krug ’95 and Jeff Eversden ’05.
This is a talented group of guys who came in with a GPA for this past fall of 3.19, which was above the Chapter, Fraternity and All Men’s averages.

Gamma Zetas jump 20 spots in fraternity GPA rankings!
Our Gamma Zeta undergrads went into the Fall semester determined to make a significant improvement in academic performance. They set a goal to finish above fraternity and university men’s averages and combined with alumni support put several programs in place to help. Their hard work and planning paid off as the chapter jumped an incredible 20 spots in the University of Illinois Fraternity GPA Rankings.Continue reading

(Editor’s note – I started to email with Dan Blaho ’92 simply because from what I had seen on his Linkedin bio, it appeared that he had taken an interesting path that would make for a good story for the Gamma Zeta News. Then, when the news hit of the protests and unrest in the Ukraine a couple of weeks ago, it all took on a new meaning.
