Networking Tips for College Success: How to Build Relationships and Land a Great Job After College

Image-1I came across another article on the value of networking for college students from the Art of Manliness that I think is very relevant for our undergraduates.  In addition to the tips mentioned in this article, they have the benefit of their mentor and the entire Gamma Zeta alumni network. Here’s the link – Networking Tips for College Success: How to Build Relationships and Land a Great Job After College

Building a Resume and Preparing for the Interview Process

Creating a resume doesn’t start in the fall of your senior year in college when you first wake up to the reality that your college years are almost over and it’s time to start looking for a career and first full time job.  For those who have the most success in the job search process and have the most options to consider, It starts the moment you step on campus as a freshman… even sooner.

The linked paper below was contributed by Dave Erhardt (Gamma Zeta ’81).  It was written by his older son John who had recently landed a great first job with PwC Consulting and addressed to his younger son, Paul, who was just starting college.  Great advice from one brother to another…

Using Linkedin

LinkedInGroupsMany people view Linkedin as a tool for those already well into their careers.  However, there can be tremendous value for undergraduate and graduate students as they are just beginning their job search.  Gamma Zeta ATOs have the additional advantage of a large and active private Linkedin Group and several subgroups by industry.  Gamma Zeta ATO members in these groups are happy to help students and each other with insight into particular companies and careers and introductions to others who can help.

To take advantage the first thing to do is to create a Linkedin Profile.  Here’s a link to an on-line article with tips in what should be in a student’s profile .

Once a profile is created, the next step is to join the ATO Gamma Zeta Illinois group and subgroups of interest.  Here’s a link to the ATO Gamma Zeta Illinois linkedin group .

Finally, familiarize yourself with linkedin.  Learn how you can search for individual names, job titles and industries to identify Gamma Zeta brothers who you’d like to meet.  Reach out to these guys respectfully and request a time convenient for them to talk.  You’ll find that the members are knowledgeable, generous with their time and happy to help.

There is a destiny that makes us brothers – Robert J. Simonds, 1924-2013

Bob SimondsOur great friend, inspiration and leader, Bob Simonds entered the Chapter Eternal on December 21, 2013.

Bob remained connected, committed and active in ATO until the very end. Just this past year he led all of us in a campaign that raised over $60,000 for ALS research. He inspired the ATO Rooftop outing in 2012 and the gathering at the Illinois vs. Washington Football game this past fall at Soldier Field that brought so many of us together, some for the first time in decades. Bob also inspired the creation of the document “Legends, Leaders, Lists and Profiles – the Stories and Men That Bind Us – Gamma Zeta – Alpha Tau Omega – University of Illinois” which you can see at our Continue reading

Gamma Zeta Alumni Celebrate the Holidays Together in Chicago

Southbranch Holiday Happy Hour 2013Over 100 Gamma Zeta alumni passed through South Branch Tavern & Grille in Chicago for our 24th annual “buy a brother a beer” holiday party in Chicago on December 20. South Branch, at 100 S Wacker Dr. turned out to be an ideal location close to both train stations and we had our biggest turnout ever. This event is really growing. This year we had representatives from the class of 1975 through the class of 2012. Special thanks to Bill “BB” Barry ’77 who backed our tab!! See pictures from the party at our Facebook page at – https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.186519891553884.1073741831.139580319581175&type=1&l=621cb582b5

Alumni Volunteers needed for Mock Interview in Chicago on January 15

We’re going to hold a Mock Interview program for the ATO Gamma Zeta undergrads in Chicago at 4:00 PM in Chicago on January 15. We’re looking for alumni volunteers to conduct the interviews. You don’t need to be an HR expert. If you don’t have a set of questions, that you normally use, we’ll provide a template and guidance. This will be practice for initial “screening/trait” interviews so anyone should be able to help. However, if you or your company has something that you regularly use for something like this, that would be great too. Here’s a draft agenda. We’re still finalizing the details:

  • What:                      ATO Gamma Zeta Mock Interview Session
  • Who:                        All Gamma Zeta undergrads and pledges are eligible
  • Date:                       Wednesday, January 15th, 2014
  • Time:                       ~4:00 PM – 6:30 PM
  • Location:              Illini Center, 200 S Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL 60606 (easy walk from both train stations)
  • Agenda:
    Introduction and explanation of format
Mock Interview 1 (30 minutes) and feedback session (15 minutes)
Mock Interview 2 (30 minutes) and feedback session (15 minutes)
    Wrap up
    Pizza reception

Please send me an email at daneluhrsen@gmail.com if you’d be willing to participate and let me know if you have any questions and/or suggestions.

We believe that this will bring tremendous value to our current undergrads in preparing them for the upcoming interview process for jobs and internships AND it will be a tremendous and unique to Gamma Zeta activity that they can talk about during rush with prospective new members. We’d really appreciate your help.

Congratulations Illinois 8A State Football Champion Coach Mike Stine ‘84

stineWhen someone reaches the pinnacle of their profession it’s certainly worth noting and one of our own, Mike Stine ’84 did that this past weekend. Mike is the Head Varsity Football Coach at Naperville Central High School and his team won the Illinois State 8A Football Championship on Saturday. The Redhawks had an incredible year fighting through the DuPage Valley Conference, arguably the toughest in the state, and then proceeding to win four straight in the playoffs against the best teams in Illinois to win the prestigious 8A crown (largest school class in Illinois).Continue reading

Rob Kneupfer, Jr. 1974 Dennison recognized with Order of Merit from Hungary

Knuepfer“…to have no narrower limits within which to work together for the elevation of man than the outlines of the world…”

We all know those words from the ATO Creed but few exemplify them better than Robert C. Knuepfer, Jr. 1974, Dennison. Normally, we reserve reporting here for Gamma Zeta News and Rob wasn’t a Gamma Zeta. But, his grandfather, Russell S White 1917 was GZ Worthy Master in 1916/17 and his uncles, Robert L. White 1946 and David N. White 1954 are Gamma Zetas. Also, Rob served as Gamma Zeta Chapter Consultant and went on to be National Worthy Grand Chief… so, we’ll proudly claim him.

On Friday, November 22 at a reception in Chicago, Rob was honored with the Order of Merit of Hungary by Zswolt Nemeth, Deputy Foreign Minister. Rob was recognized for his years of service to Hungary and in large part for his efforts in helping Hungary transition from socialism to capitalism. Just to put Rob’s influence in perspective, he also oversaw the opening of Baker & McKenzie offices in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev, Tashkent, Baku, Warsaw and Prague, and helped bring high-profile U.S. companies to Hungary, including General Motors, Ford, General Electric and Pepsi.

Here’s a link to an article in the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin which provides a great deal more detail about Rob – “A knight-like recognition” – http://www.chicagolawbulletin.com/Articles/2013/12/02/Amicus-Curious-Knuepfer-12-2-13.aspx

Bob Simonds (Gamma Zeta ’46) was invited to represent ATO at the reception honoring Rob. Bob was unable to attend so he invited John Aymond ’80 and Dane Luhrsen ’77 to stand in for him and they were honored to represent ATO in support of Rob at the reception.
