12 Months of Carp – Bruce “Carp” Barry ’80

carpBruce “Carp” Barry ’80 has done a calendar with a different picture of himself for each month. It’s a fundraiser for the Taylorville Quarterback Club in support of youth sports in Taylorville, IL. This pic just shows a sampling of the months. Click here for a note from Cary “CMAC” McMillan and an opportunity to order one of these instant classic calendars. This could only be done by Carp! I hear they are already into their second printing!!

Tunney Fundraiser and Illini BBall Watch Party wrap up and pictures

photo 4Last night we had a very successful event to raise funds for Chicago 44th Ward Alderman Tom Tunney’s ’77 re-election campaign and to watch some Illini Basketball.

About 25 guys attended in person and a total of about 30 guys donated over $7,000 for Tom’s campaign.  THANKS!!  Also special thanks to Craig Nadborne ’78 and Nick Ftikas ’02 for organizing, Matt Menna ’93 for having his team at the Schoolyard Tavern lay out a great spread and provide fantastic service!  And… thanks to Alderman Tunney for representing us all well and his kind words about ATO!!  Good luck to Tom with his campaign!!Continue reading

Message from our Chairman, Jack Klues ’77

jack-kluesBrothers:

I hope this letter finds you and your family off to a peaceful and productive New Year.

Speaking in behalf of the Board and House Corporation, we have found the first weeks of the Spring semester both interesting and promising.  The physical plant has never looked better.  Even though our beloved Chapter House does show its age in places and renovations are far from complete, the undergrads are showing the place the respect and care we all know it deserves.

The Chancellor for the University of Illinois, Dr. Phyllis Wise, came to the House for dinner on January 21st.  All of you would have been very proud of how Alumni and Undergrads worked together to create a truly special experience worthy of such a high profile VIP guest.

Class of 2018 Initiation

IMG_0849On Monday, February 9, Gamma Zeta initiated our Class of 2018!  This is a very strong group of 38 guys.  Their class GPA is 3.19 ,# 2 among fraternities.  Congrats guys and welcome!!

Here are some comments from alumni who attended the ceremony…

… it was very well done.

Jimmy and his team executed the ceremony with a professional attitude, demonstrated the importance of doing it well, moved through the various protocols respectfully, and did it with the meaning it deserved.

Any of the BOT would have been very pleased to see how the traditions are executed and valued.Continue reading

Docs Seth and TSully ’78s in Honduras

Joe Pearson ’15 and Paul Jaroslawski ’15 were selected through an application process to receive scholarships funded by Gamma Zeta Alumni to join Dr. Seth Berl ’78 and Dr. Tom Sullivan ’78 on a week long medical mission trip to Honduras in March. Restored Heldman Trophy

From 2000 through 2009 Gamma Zeta Alumni gathered in August each year for a golf tournament to remember Matt Heldman ’98, a former Gamma Zeta and Illini basketball star who tragically died in an automobile accident.  The tournament raised thousands of dollars for the Matt Heldman scholarship fund which is awarded each year to deserving ATO undergrads.

A huge trophy was commissioned and displayed in the chapter house to recognize the winners of the tournament each year.  Unfortunately, over the last few years, the trophy had fallen into disrepair and was nearly thrown out.  The good news is thanks to a generous donation from Dave Krug ’95, the trophy has been saved, restored and is back in it’s rightful place at the base of the stairs in our front entryway.Continue reading

Gamma Zeta Class of 2018 Initiation – Alumni, Please Attend!!

foundingbanquet (1)The Gamma Zeta Class of 2018 initiation will be held Monday evening at 6pm on February 9th at 1101 W. Pennsylvania Ave. All alumni are welcome and encouraged to attend. It is really a very cool experience… all 2700 or so of us who have been Gamma Zetas since our founding on March 21, 1895, 120 years ago, have participated in this same ceremony. If you haven’t been back since your own initiation, I guarantee that you will find the evening meaningful and enjoyable. And… it sends an incredibly important message to our newest undergraduate members about the lifelong nature of our commitment to ATO and our care for our house. Please attend if you can! Attire is suite and tie.
